Video Institute Documentary Earns National Awards

Central Terminal documentary wins more honors

The Canisius College Video Institute documentary “Central Terminal: Saving a Buffalo Landmark” was recently honored for excellence in television production, earning two bronze Telly Awards in the “Documentary” and “Student Production” categories.

The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The Video Institute project was in competition with national and international production companies, advertising agencies, cable operators and corporate video departments. The bronze Telly is the second-highest award given in this competition, and only approximately 20 percent of the 14,000 entries earn this recognition.

“Central Terminal,” produced by DMA majors Kirsten Jahn (’07) and Scott Richardson (’09) under the direction of Barbara Irwin, Ph.D., director of the Video Institute, traces the history of Buffalo’s “most beloved building,” including its architectural and social significance and the efforts of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to bring the building back to life.

Funded in part by the John R. Oishei Foundation, the Canisius College Video Institute provides students with the opportunity to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that will benefit the college and the community at large. Students produce documentaries and promotional videos for local and international not-for-profit and service agencies that otherwise would not have the resources to tell their stories in this way.
