BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius College Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series on Law in American Society will welcome Nadine Strossen, JD, to campus on Thursday, September 25 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. Strossen’s lecture, entitled “Terrorism, the Constitution and Individual Liberties,” is free and open to the public.
Nadine Strossen is the national president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a professor of law at New York Law School, where she teaches constitutional law, international human rights and freedom of speech.
Strossen has served as president of the ACLU since 1991 and is the first woman to head the nation’s largest and oldest civil liberties organization. Under her leadership, the ACLU has grown tremendously: membership has doubled to more than 500,000 and its national staff has tripled. Through litigation, activism and lobbying, the organization has led numerous civil liberty struggles including the defense of free speech and privacy in the
Internet and post-September 11 world; and the fight against government secrecy, abuses of power and human rights violations.
In addition to presiding over the 83-member ACLU Board, Strossen is a full-time professor of law. She has more than 250 published works, which have appeared in many scholarly and general interest publications. Her book,
Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex and the Fight for Women’s Rights, was named by
The New York Times as a Notable Book of 1995. Her co-authored book,
Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex: Hate Speech, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties was named an outstanding book by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America. Strossen is also frequently called upon by the national media and has appeared on virtually every national news program.
Strossen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she was editor of the Harvard Law Review. Prior to becoming a law professor, Strossen practiced law for nine years in Minneapolis and New York City.
The Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series is sponsored by the Frank G. Raichle Pre-Law Center, established at Canisius College in 1981. The center was made possible by a gift from the late Frank Raichle, Esq., a leader of the American Bar Association and former member of the Canisius College Board of Trustees.
