Video Institute Documentary Selected For Film Festival

“Southern India: A Collision of Cultures” selected for screening at the 3rd Annual Buffalo Niagara Film Festival

“Southern India: A Collision of Cultures,” a 30-minute video documentary produced by the Canisius College Video Institute, has been competitively selected for screening at the 3rd Annual Buffalo Niagara Film Festival (BNFF). Student producers Scott Richardson ’09 and Jennifer Eberhart ’08 worked under the supervision of Barbara Irwin, PhD, professor and chair of the Communication Studies Department.

“Southern India: A Collision of Cultures” follows the journey as a group of students and faculty from Canisius travel to Southern India with the 'Christianity on the Road Less Traveled' program. The documentary highlights religious, social, economic, and cultural aspects of this ancient and fascinating country as experienced by the group on their month-long immersion trip in the summer of 2007. The film explores the caste system, technology industries, Hindu and Jain religions, the roots of Christianity in India, and the natural beauty of the country. In a place where many cultures collide, the hopes and dreams of the Indian people are strikingly similar to those of the travelers.

The Buffalo Niagara Film Festival will run May 1-10, 2009 and will screen films at various locations throughout Western New York.

The Canisius College Video Institute provides students with the opportunity to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that will benefit the college and the community at large. Students produce documentaries and promotional videos for local and international not-for-profit and service agencies that otherwise would not have the resources to tell their stories in this way.

The Canisius College Video Institute is funded in part by the John R. Oishei Foundation and directed by Barbara Irwin, Ph.D., chair of the Communication Studies department.
