Poe, Zaepfel To Receive LaSalle Medal
Honors will be given during undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16
BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius College Alumni Association will confer the LaSalle Medal upon Ronald F. Poe and Laura A. (Montante) Zaepfel, during undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m., at the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena. The LaSalle Medal is the Alumni Association’s most distinguished award and recognizes those who make substantial contributions to advance the interests of Canisius College.
A 1959 alumnus of Canisius College, Poe is president of Ronald F. Poe & Associates, a private real estate investment firm in White Plains, NY. Previously, Poe was senior advisor of Legg Mason Dorman & Wilson Inc., a real estate investment banking firm. He retired from the firm in 1998 as chairman and chief executive officer.
Poe is active in many community organizations including Canisius College, where he has dedicated his time and expertise in a variety of capacities. Poe served six years on the Canisius College Board of Trustees, including one year as chair. During his tenure, Poe also was a member of the Board’s Executive, Building & Grounds and Faculty Welfare committees. In addition, he represented Canisius College on the governing board of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), which represents New York State’s 111 independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities.
A resident of the New York City area, Poe is also a regular attendee at Canisius College alumni events in the New York City area and was a member of his 45th class reunion committee. He also was a member of the college’s Imagine Canisius capital campaign committee for metropolitan New York. Poe holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Canisius College.
A 1986 alumna of Canisius College, Zaepfel is vice president of corporate relations at Uniland Development Company, a full-service commercial real estate developer. She joined the firm in 1986 and has worked in both marketing and public relations. In her current role, Zaepfel is responsible for community affairs, and working with regional leaders and government institutions. In addition, she manages Uniland’s charitable contributions program.
Zaepfel is active in many community organizations including Canisius College, where she has dedicated her time and expertise in a variety of capacities. She served six years on the Canisius College Board of Trustees. During her tenure, Zaepfel was a member of the Board’s Executive, Finance & Facilities, Audit, Mission & Identity and Government Relations committees.
In 2005, she participated in the college’s Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education Self-Study, which resulted in Canisius’ regional accreditation being reaffirmed by the association. Zaepfel served on the Mission, Goals and Objectives Committee, as well as the Leadership and Governance Committee.
She is also past president of the Canisius College Alumni Board and was a member of her 20th class reunion committee. She volunteers with the Canisius College Annual Fund and served as chair of its alumni division from 1999-2000.
Zaepfel is a past participant in the college’s Women’s Leadership Conference, which features a series of educational workshops, panel presentations and networking opportunities for women business leaders. She also is a past participant in the Canisius College Career Mentor Program.
Zaepfel holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Canisius College and a master’s degree in organizational communication from the University at Buffalo.
