
BUFFALO, NY – Gabrielle R. Paoletti ’09 will serve as the student speaker during Canisius College undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. in U.B.’s Alumni Arena (Amherst). Approximately 730 undergraduate degrees will be conferred.
Paoletti is a
math and statistics major at Canisius, a Presidential Academic Scholar and a member of the All-College Honors Program. She holds an outstanding academic record of 4.0.
Actively engaged in campus life, Paoletti served in numerous leadership roles throughout her four years at Canisius. She helped build a strong community atmosphere for students as a resident assistant. As vice chair of the Honors Student Council, Paoletti coordinated programming and service projects for honors students. She also served as an assistant in the college’s Tutoring Center; a tour guide for the Office of Admissions; director of the college’s Contemporary Music Ensemble, which performs during Sunday evening Mass at the college’s Christ the King Chapel; and was president of the Canisius College Chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society.
An avid volunteer, Paoletti participated in many of the college’s Canisius Community Days, a popular program in which students assist community partners with various projects at food banks, shelters and refugee agencies. She also attended several of the college’s Winter Service Weeks to New York City, where she volunteered at schools, nursing homes, soup kitchens and street ministries. In spring 2008, Paoletti traveled to El Salvador for a two-week service immersion trip with the Office of Campus Ministry.
Paoletti’s academic excellence and leadership at Canisius have earned her numerous recognitions. She is the 2009 recipient of the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Senior Award, which recognizes a student who has distinguished him or herself through leadership roles and involvement at Canisius. Paoletti is also the recipient of the Dr. William M. Huebsch Award in Mathematics, which recognizes a Canisius senior who demonstrates excellent performance in mathematics and who shows great promise in the teaching of mathematics. In addition, Paoletti received the Rev. Francis A. O’Malley, S.J., Memorial Award, presented to a member of the senior class for outstanding scholastic achievement throughout his or her four-year course of study at Canisius.
Paoletti was one of only two Canisius honor students invited to participate in the Bates White LLC Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Bates White is a leading economic consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Through the REU grant, Paoletti conducted research on the economics of addition. She also participated in the highly competitive Bates White Summer Consultant Program, where she worked on cartel cases in the company’s antitrust practice.
Upon graduating from Canisius, Paoletti will volunteer with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Houston, TX. She will work with the Bering Omega Community Services agency, which is a medical and hospice center for people who have AIDS or are HIV positive.
