Canisius Names Three Presidential Finalists

Search committee has narrowed the field to three candidates to become college's 24th president

Buffalo, NY - The Presidential Search Committee has narrowed its selection to three finalists for the position of the 24th president of Canisius College. President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., announced in May that he will retire from his position as president of Canisius after 17 years of service, at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.

The presidential finalists are

Steven R. DiSalvo, PhD, president and founder of The Hopewell Group Inc., New York, NY, a for profit organization that provides philanthropic advisement services to individuals, families, foundations and corporations to help maximize the impact they can have with strategic giving. DiSalvo founded the organization in 2006.

Previously, DiSalvo was executive director of Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation from 2002 - 2006, a non-profit organization that provides educational programs and awareness to help stop the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. From 2001 – 2004, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Junior Achievement of New York Inc.

DiSalvo served as director of major gifts & capital campaign at Fairfield University from 1998 – 2001; executive assistant to the president at Loyola University Chicago from 1994 – 1998 and development officer at Fordham University from 1989 – 1994.

He was an adjunct professor of marketing and public relations in the Charles F. Dolan School of Business at Fairfield University from 1998 – 2001 and an adjunct professor of marketing and management in the Fordham University College of Business Administration from 1989 – 1992.

DiSalvo earned a BS in psychology, an MBA in marketing and a PhD in educational leadership from Fordham University.

Guiyou Huang, PhD, dean of Biscayne College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and director of the Institute for World Languages at St. Thomas University, Miami Gardens, FL. Huang is also a professor of English at St. Thomas. He served as dean of Undergraduate Studies and Programs at St. Thomas University from 2005 – 2007.

Previously, Huang was the director of The Honors College at Grand Valley State University, MI, from 2004 – 2005; chair of the Department of English at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania from 2002- 2004 and director of the University of Kutztown Honors Program from 2000 – 2004.

Huang was a professor of English at Grand Valley State University from 2004 – 2005; a professor of English from 2003 – 2004, an associate professor of English from 2000 – 2003, and an assistant professor of English from 1995 – 2000, at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania; and an adjunct professor at Lehigh University in 2000.

He earned a BA in English from Qufu Teachers University, China; an MA in English from Peking University and a PhD in English from Texas A&M University, College Station.

John J. Hurley, JD, executive vice president and vice president for college relations at Canisius College, serves as the president’s designated senior administrative official responsible for strategic planning, integrated marketing and legal and compliance issues. Hurley also serves as the senior development and external relations officer, leading capital, planned and annual giving programs, grants services, all external and media relations, alumni relations and college publications.

Hurley was named executive vice president in 2007, and has served as vice president for college relations since 1997. He serves on the college’s Board of Trustees, President’s Cabinet,
Budget Committee and is the chair of the Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee.

Prior to Canisius, Hurley was a partner with Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber from 1984 – 1997. A commercial lawyer, he concentrated in secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency, creditor’s rights, and acquisitions of troubled companies.

Hurley earned a BA in English and history, summa cum laude, from Canisius College and a JD from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Each presidential candidate will spend three days on campus to meet with members of the Board of Trustees, Faculty Senate, President’s Cabinet, Undergraduate Student Association, college deans and the Jesuit community. Each candidate will also present at a Canisius community forum for all members of the campus community.

Following the candidate visits, the search committee will provide feedback to the Board of Trustees, who will make the final decision.

The Presidential Search Committee is comprised of members of the Canisius College Board of Trustees, alumni, administrators, faculty, staff, and student representatives. The college worked in consultation with The Reid Group.
