Alum Receives Tim Russert Medal Of Merit
Cassandra Eldred ’09 honored by Buffalo Broadcasters Association
Cassandra Eldred ’09 received the Tim Russert Medal of Merit from the Buffalo Broadcasters Association for her dedication to the broadcasting profession. Eldred received the award during the association’s Hall of Fame Induction ceremony held on Tuesday, September 22 at WNED-TV.
A
communication studies major at Canisius with a concentration in journalism and media studies, Eldred earned a 3.6 grade point average. She served as president of the Canisius College television station (CCTV) during her senior year and served as producer. Eldred also participated in the Canisius College Video Institute and produced videos for the Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Assistance Program in Buffalo and Habitat for Humanity’s Buffalo chapter. The Habitat video earned a 2009 Gold Excalibur Award from the Public Relations Society of America, Buffalo/Niagara Chapter.
Eldred was also involved in the production of
Kaleidoscope, a television program the Canisius College Video Institute produces for the Network of Religious Communities, which airs on WGRZ-TV and Time Warner Cable. She received the inaugural WGRZ-TV Excellence in Television News Award at the college’s 2009 Honors Convocation.
Eldred completed internships at CNN in Atlanta under the supervision of Southeast Bureau Chief Mary Lynn Ryan and at Buffalo Rising where she wrote and produced feature stories about the city’s business community.
The following Buffalo broadcasting legends were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the event: Randy Michaels, former WGR disc jockey; Marie Rice, former WIVB-TV reporter; Don Polec, former WKBW-TV reporter; Pat Feldballe, the voice of local and national commercials and Fred Klestine, former disc jockey.
