Rev. Dean Brackley, S.J. to lecture on “Christian Solidarity in an Age of Globalization – Higher Standards for Higher Education”
BUFFALO, NY – Canisius College will welcome Rev. Dean Brackley, S.J., to campus on Wednesday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. His lecture, “Christian Solidarity in an Age of Globalization – Higher Standards for Higher Education,” is free and open to the public.
A professor of theology and ethics, Father Brackley spent more than a decade teaching at the José Simeon Cañas Central America University (UCA) in El Salvador, where he replaced one of the martyred Jesuits killed in the UCA massacre on November 17, 1989.
Prior to his service here, Father Brackley served for nearly 20 years as a priest, educator and community organizer to Latin Americans living in the South Bronx of New York City. He later spent one year at Fordham University, before joining the staff of the UCA where he taught theology and administered the UCA’s School for Religious Education.
Referred to as a man who holds a thoughtful passion for justice, Father Brackley entered the Society of Jesus in 1964 and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1976. He later received his doctorate in theological ethics at the University of Chicago in 1980. Father Brackley is currently living in the United States and working on a book that he hopes will communicate the key themes of Ignatian spirituality, to people committed to social change.
Father Brackley has two previously published works of popular education: People Power and Organize! A Manual for Leaders. In 1995, the UCA press published his text on Christian social ethics, Etica Social Cristiana and in 1996, Orbis Books published his book Divine Revolution: Salvation and Liberation in Catholic Thought.
