Florida Justice Charles T. Wells To Speak

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Florida to lecture on “Judicial Independence and the Role of State Supreme Courts in the Election Process”

BUFFALO, NY – Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Florida, Charles T. Wells, will speak at Canisius College on Thursday, April 25 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. Justice Wells’ lecture, “Judicial Independence and the Role of State Supreme Courts in the Election Process,” is sponsored by the Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series on Law in American Society at Canisius College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Justice Wells was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in 1994 by then Governor Lawton Chiles. Six years later, he was named Chief Justice with the responsibility of presiding over the 2000 presidential election cases that eventually involved the United States Supreme Court, in one of the most controversial decisions in its history.

A native Floridian, Justice Wells received his bachelor and juris doctor degrees from the University of Florida. Upon graduation from law school, Justice Wells entered private practice where he spent the next 28 years, until his appointment to the Supreme Court. During that time, Justice Wells became a certified mediator of the Florida Circuit Court and the U.S. District Court. He served on the Florida Insurance Commissioner’s Special Study Commission on Medical Malpractice Reform and was a member of the Council of Bar Presidents. Justice Wells was also the recipient of the Martindale Hubbell’s AV rating and Bar Register Preeminent Attorney Recognition.

Justice Wells is a member of the Florida Bar Association, of which he served on the organization’s Board of Governors; the American Bar Association; the Orange County Bar Association; and the Tallahassee Bar Association. He is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Justice Wells spent much of his career providing pro bono service to those in need. An active participant in the Orange County Legal Aid Society, his involvement in the Guardian Ad Litem Program, where he represented dependent and abused children in juvenile and domestic court proceedings, earned Justice Wells the Legal Aid Society’s Award of Excellence in 1989.

The Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series is sponsored by the Frank G. Raichle Pre-Law Center, established at Canisius College in 1981.
