Joseph S. Nye Jr., PhD, International Relations Expert, To Speak At Canisius College

BUFFALO, NY – Joseph S. Nye Jr., PhD, University Distinguished Service Professor and former dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, will speak at Canisius College on Monday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge of the Richard E. Winter ’42Student Center. Nye’s lecture, entitled “American Power in the 21st Century” is free and open to the public. The event is presented by The William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series.

Nye was named the most influential scholar in American foreign policy in a 2008 poll of 2,700 international relations scholars. A 2011 poll rated him as the fourth most influential scholar in international relations over the past 20 years. From 1977-79, Nye was deputy undersecretary of state and chaired the National Security Council Group on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons. From 1993-94, he chaired the National Intelligence Council, which prepares intelligence estimates for the president and from 1994-95, he served as assistant secretary of defense for International Security Affairs. Nye won Distinguished Service Medals from all three agencies.

Nye has published 13 academic books, a novel, and more than 150 articles in professional and policy journals. His most recent books include Soft Power, The Powers to Lead and The Future of Power, which The Economist called “rigorous and convincing.”

Nye is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the British Academy, the American Academy of Diplomacy, and an honorary fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He is the recipient of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson Award, the Charles Merriam Award from The American Political Science Association, France’s Palmes Academiques, and various honorary degrees.

Nye holds a PhD in political science from Harvard University, did post-graduate work at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, and holds a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude from Princeton University.
