U.S. News Salutes Canisius' Online Programs for Veterans

Canisius College’s graduate online programs earned a place on U.S. News & World Report’s first-ever ranking of “Best Online Programs for Veterans.”  The rankings recognize colleges and universities that have taken steps to improve the higher education experience for veterans, are certified for the G.I. Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.  The institutions included in the rankings also consider granting academic credit for military training and offer flexibility for distance learners taking courses at several schools.  To ensure academic quality, all schools included in the “Best Online Programs for Veterans” first had to be ranked in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 “Best Online Education Programs.”

Of the 213 schools in the graduate business category, only 29 were eligible to be ranked for the “Best Online Programs for Veterans.” Canisius’ online graduate business program placed 23rd on the list.  Canisius offers an online master’s degree program in international business.

Of the 208 schools in the graduate education category, only 31 were eligible to be ranked for the “Best Online Programs for Veterans.”  Canisius’ online graduate programs in education ranked 16th.   Canisius offers a total of 14 online graduate programs in education, which range from educational leadership to education technologies and emerging media.

“The rankings validate the attention our faculty and staff pay to online education,” says Michael J. Pardales, PhD, dean of the School of Education and Human Services.  “Teaching with quality and integrity to assure student success is our highest priority.”

“Canisius has a long history of supporting the men and women who have answered our nation’s call to achieve their educational goals,” says Andrew Overfield, coordinator of the Office of Veterans Services.  “Our online programs provide veterans and service members the flexibility to obtain their degrees anywhere in the world while still taking advantage of the support and quality of education for which Canisius is known.”

Canisius College instituted an Office of Veterans Services in March 2011 to meet the needs of a growing veteran student population, which has more than doubled since 2007.  It has since been designated by G.I. Jobs magazine as a “Military Friendly School” and earned a place on the 2013 “Guide to Military Friendly Colleges & Universities,” released by Military Advanced Education magazine.  Both organizations recognized Canisius’ Office of Veterans Services for its flexibility of online learning options for veterans, the extent of transfer credits accepted, its on-campus ROTC and participating in Servicemember Opportunity Colleges, as well as veteran assistance support.

One of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York.
