WBC Commemorates 10 Years in Business

BUFFALO, NY ― The Women’s Business Center at Canisius College (WBC) will commemorate 10 years of service with an anniversary reception for clients, and community members and leaders on Tuesday, October 10, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, located at the corner of Main Street and Eastwood Place.

The Women’s Business Center at Canisius College is the region’s most comprehensive resource for small business owners and professional women. It provides services in the areas of training, counseling and mentoring. Specifically, the WBC offers coaching, education, business development programs and networking opportunities that enable women in business to build and strengthen their enterprises and networks. In addition, the WBC provides entrepreneurs and small business owners with the critical skills, knowledge, tools and support to help grow their businesses.

“Small businesses are the economic engine behind American job growth and prosperity,” says Melinda Rath Sanderson MBA ’11, executive director of the Women’s Business Center. “Our mission is to assist new and existing small businesses, which are an important part of the Western New York economy, and to provide that important link between our local educational institutions and the economic centers of our community.”

Since opening in September 2003, the WBC has served 21,703 program participants, been involved in the startup of 218 businesses and helped create 290 jobs.

Housed in Canisius’ Demerly Hall, located at 2635 Main Street near Jewett Parkway, the Women’s Business Center was established, in part, with a five-year, $750,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration secured by Franklin J. Sciortino ’56, district director of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“The Women’s Business Center is a valuable and useful resource for women, who represent the fastest growing small business market,” says Sciortino. “The community, the college and most importantly women entrepreneurs benefit greatly from the practical and educational opportunities offered by the WBC.”

Canisius is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation and the premier private university in Western New York.
