Expanding the Academic Possibilities of the All-College Honors Program
Dr. Robert Butler

Goals and Objectives
This proposal for an Oishei Professorship seeks to strengthen the All-College Honors Program by providing an integrated sequence of new courses, seminars, lecture series, independent studies, and opportunities for scholarly travel and research. By thus strengthening the All-College Honors Program, such a grant will not only substantially enrich the educational experience of current honors students but will also greatly increase the College’s ability to attract and retain the students of the highest quality.

The proposal focuses on the following activities:
The development of three interrelated new courses in American literature and culture: Honors 103, a course taught in the summer to area high school students whom we are attempting to recruit, Honors 101, the first semester course in Composition and Literature taught to incoming freshman students, and Honors 350, an elective seminar open to honors juniors and seniors.

The development of an All-College Honors Program lecture series which would be thematically related to these new courses but would be available to all honors students and faculty as well as the college community in general.

The development of scholarly travel opportunities which would be directly related to materials studies in these three courses. These travel opportunities would benefit not only the students in these new courses but would also be made available to all other honors students as well.

The development of independent study opportunities which would allow students to probe in greater depth material explored in any of the three new courses.

The establishment of an All-College Honors journal and the development of an honors Web site on the Canisius College Home Page. The honors journal would be composed of writings by honors faculty and students. The web site will describe the All-College Honors Program in general while giving special emphasis to the goals and activities of this Oishei Professorship. Both of these resources will be helpful in the recruitment and retention of honors students.
