Teaching Natural History and Ecology at Canisius College

Dr. Sara Morris

This proposal will create a quality series of natural history and ecology courses that will continue to be offered at Canisius College long after the three-year Oishei Teaching Professorship is completed. Students who learn of these courses while being recruited or as freshmen will have the opportunity to participate in them in the future.

Objectives

  • To create two new biology courses for non-majors and to augment the existing Field Ecology course for Biology and Environmental Science majors.
  • To promote Western New York by the preparation of a monograph on the natural history of the area.
  • To strengthen the ties between Canisius College and the Buffalo Museum of Science.
  • To recruit students and increase the profile of the college through the interactions with the Buffalo Museum of Science.
  • To acquire modern instrumentation that will increase the ability of Canisius College Environmental Science and Biology majors to obtain quality internships and post-graduate positions, as well as to increase opportunities for independent research in the life sciences.
