Curriculum Development for the Integrated Teaching of Modem Languages and International Business: An Applied Model

The project develops an innovative and non-traditional program integrating the teaching of Modern Languages and International Business. Project activities will integrate Curriculum Development in Humanities and Social Sciences, Course Development that combines the teaching of Spanish and International Management, and Community Development that links the programming of Canisius College more closely to the needs of the Buffalo Community, specifically the Hispanic Community.

Dr. Snodgrass & Dr. Wescott will develop a new course that illustrates how the Spanish language impacts international management decisions. The course will be team taught and will integrate Spanish language training and international business education. It will be taught in both Spanish and English and use material written in both languages as part of a new teaching methodology.

To solidify the skills of the students taking the new course, the grant will be used to develop opportunities to experience business within its cultural context. Students will be able to choose an internship with a firm in Mexico, or an internship with a firm from the Hispanic Community in Buffalo. The experience will give students the opportunity to develop their skills in language and international business.

In addition to building linkages between different disciplines within Canisius College, the proposal will strengthen ties with programs in other countries, such as Mexico, and with the local community. The program will educate students in the forces of international trade and the cultural needs of the Hispanic Community so they can participate in appropriate economic development for this neighborhood.

The project will develop experiential activities for students that include language immersion, internships in international settings, internships with local firms engaged in international business, involvement with local cultural organizations, and research projects leading to economic development in the local community, especially the Hispanic Community. As a long-range goal, the project will lead to the development of a new degree program in Foreign Languages and International Management.
