"Learning German at Canisius opened a whole new world of experiences to me. With the language skills gained there, I was hired to work at a German language immersion summer camp, where I made friends from around the country, as well as from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. After graduation, I successfully applied for a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study in Vienna, Austria. Surrounded by the magnificence of Austria's imperial past and the coffeehouse culture of its present, the city quickly became my second home. Here I was able to meet the US Ambassador to Austria, as well as the Austrian Foreign Minister, and to talk with those who shape policy in this prosperous European nation. I also taught English in a high school in Vienna. Here, I was able to see first-hand what it's like to grow up in Austria and learn in an Austrian school (very different from our own schools in the US!), and had the rewarding experience of seeing my students mature into fine young individuals, many of whom I now count among my friends. While on the Fulbright, I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, including trips to Germany and the UK, to France and Italy, Poland and Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as Bulgaria. After an amazing two years, I can confidently say that I have made lifelong friends and that I shared many experiences that I will value forever. I cannot imagine my life without German! And: Canisius made it all possible."
