Magis – doing more, being more, praying more, giving more. I have witnessed this since my first encounter with Canisius College.
About ten years ago I enrolled in a graduate course. Prior to the first day of class I came to campus to pay my bill. I should have gone to Health Science; instead, I pulled into the driveway heading to Lyons. I looked around, trying to determine where I should be, and I did not pay attention to where I was. I missed the driveway. Then I saw a Public Safety officer. (They are everywhere!) Yikes! I thought I was in trouble. He approached the car and said with a smile on his face, “You look lost.” I explained. His very happy response was, “No problem. I am driving by there. Just follow me.” Wow! What a welcoming (and forgiving) first impression I received on my first visit to campus.
On my first day of class I was where I was supposed to be. Ten minutes into class, the same Public Safety officer walked into the room, made eye contact with another student and said, “I just wanted to make sure you got here okay. I am sorry that I couldn’t walk you here, but I thought I provided good directions. I was needed on another part of the campus.”
My first impressions of this college community have been reinforced many times over the years. I am so proud when I hear unsolicited stories and witness faculty, administrators and staff going above and beyond to assist our community, our students and each other. We strive to do more and we strive to give more, so that we and those we touch can be more.
