"I arrived at Canisius with no background in learning the German language. Being of German heritage, it was my goal to achieve an advanced mastery of the language within four years. Through much hard work and thanks to the intensive and rewarding courses offered by the German Department, I was able to not only achieve my goal, but also to exceed my expectations for my knowledge of German. My love of the language and cultures of the German-speaking world became the motivating factors for me to pursue graduate studies and a Fulbright in Vienna, Austria.
In addition to the courses themselves, experiences outside the Canisius classroom take on great importance: Students have the opportunity to meet German political and business leaders; students connect with Canisius alumni who have achieved success with their knowledge of German; and, most importantly, students experience German culture firsthand through study abroad and cultural events hosted at Canisius or in the Buffalo area.
The Canisius German program allowed me to meet many like-minded and highly motivated individuals: peers and mentors with whom I was able to share my passion for the German language and the importance of the German-speaking countries in contemporary diplomacy, business, science, and thought. Mastering German will not only open doors in terms of students' future career prospects, but also will broaden students' knowledge and equip them with advanced analytical skills via a strong and diverse offering of German electives (from politics, philosophy, and the fine arts, etc.). My experiences with the Canisius German program are ones that I will cherish for many years to come."
