"In high school I studied French, so I came to Canisius without any experience with the German language.  However, by taking full advantage of Canisius' small and interactive classes, our dedicated professor Dr. Böhm, my semester abroad, and the various cultural activities that Canisius offers to students and the community, I was able to develop a deep understanding of and love for the German language and culture.  The German instruction at Canisius is superb! Indeed, after three and a half years of study I was fully prepared for my semester abroad, during which all of my courses were in German.  When I returned to Canisius for my senior year, I was pleased to see how quickly my German had improved.  As a freshman, I had no idea that in four years I would be able to read, write, and speak German so well and so confidently.

I graduated from Canisius in 2011 with majors in German, Philosophy, International Relations, and European Studies.  The confidence and urge to explore that my time at Canisius and abroad fostered in me led me to rural Thailand. There, I spent a year and a half teaching English, learning Thai, and traveling extensively in Southeast Asia.  Since returning to America to work on my master's degree, my German skills have led to a wonderful part-time job as a German-language tour guide at Niagara Falls.  When I complete my MBA this summer, I am confident that my German will open doors for me and set me apart from my peers.

Even if I were not to continue to use German professionally, though, I will always be thankful that I studied German.  The German program at Canisius College is not only about learning a language; German students at Canisius are exposed to wonderful German literature, films, music, and works of art.  Canisius College's German program has enriched my life immeasurably, and I strongly encourage future students at Canisius to join the program."
