"Summa cum laude graduate, commencement speaker and Fulbright scholar. As a Freshman, how could I ever have imagined achieving any of these three? It was by happy accident that I first took a German course at Canisius College. Having taken a hiatus from German language studies before college, I entered the German program with very elementary knowledge of the language. Dr. Böhm personally reached out to me during my first semesters and I found myself quickly advancing. By the time I studied abroad in the small Bavarian town of Eichstätt my junior year, I was pleased to be mistaken for a Swedish or Danish man throughout Germany (next step: be mistaken for a Bavarian!). I know that my German language skills are advanced, and that I have a unique understanding of German history, philosophy, film and literature; but more than that, I know I’m a better person for having studied German at Canisius. The program is truly exceptional – it has changed the trajectory of my life! – and Dr. Böhm has never fallen short in challenging us, his “dear friends” and students. I have learned to think in sharper, more critical ways, and I have learned to approach questions with great empathy and humanity. I look forward to immersing myself further into the German language and culture as a Fulbright scholar, and hopefully too as a Ph.D. student the following year (studying European and German politics)."
