I chose to enroll in the Canisius College German program because I was looking for an environment in which I could develop my language skills and put them to practical use. What I didn't know was that I would learn more about the German language and culture than I could have ever imagined. Having visited the campus before, I had met Dr. Böhm and could see how important this program was to him. I knew that this was not going to be your average language major, and that was just what I was hoping for. The small class sizes and individual attention from the professors allowed for all of the students to build and improve their language skills and knowledge, regardless of any student’s previous experience with the German language. The chance to study abroad (mandatory to complete the major) was one of the best experiences of my life. Living in and adjusting to the culture I had learned so much about, as well as using the language with native speakers on a daily basis, was rewarding and allowed me to grow as an independent adult. By studying a foreign language and living in a foreign country, I have become a more well-rounded, open-minded person. And, even after graduating, I have had numerous opportunities to use my German language skills, such as with native speakers visiting the area, when reading German news articles or watching German television and films, and even when training my dog. I will always be thankful for the Canisius College German program, my professors, and my peers, who made my time at Canisius an extremely fulfilling and unforgettable one.
