Professor Johnson has been associated with Canisius for many years and is currently an assistant professor. Her teaching interests include fraud examination and government and nonprofit accounting. Involving students in activities such as Project Adrian with the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit and bringing speakers to campus to share their real world experiences with students are indicative of her interest in helping students to better understand the accounting profession.
Professor Johnson has designed a course entitled “Fraud Examination: Detection and Deterrence” which incorporates critical thinking, professional skepticism, analytical techniques and ethical decision-making. She has added a service learning component to the Nonprofit Accounting course, working with students to develop research projects that are done in conjunction with and for the benefit of local nonprofit organizations.
Prior to beginning her teaching career, Professor Johnson worked as a senior accountant at Touche Ross (now Deloitte) where she audited a variety of entities in government, healthcare and manufacturing and also served as controller for several small organizations. She consults with small businesses and nonprofit organizations as the liaison between the internal accounting personnel and the outside auditors.
Professor Johnson serves as the faculty advisor to the New Academic Programs Committee of the Canisius College Council on Accountancy and is currently the faculty moderator of the Accounting Society.
As an active member of the accounting profession, Professor Johnson serves on the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountant’s Higher Education and Nonprofit Organization Committees. She is also serving as Chair of the Buffalo Chapter’s Nonprofit Committee and has served as chair of other chapter committees. She is also the Canisius Campus Ambassador to the NYSSCPA’s and the AICPA’s Campus Champion.
In the community, Professor Johnson has served on nonprofit Boards of Directors, including the Tonawandas’ Council on the Arts. She is chair of the Audit Committee for the Buffalo Board of Education.
Professor Johnson is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Forensic Accountant. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Society of Women Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors and the American Accounting Association.
