Admission and Curriculum

Philosophy Department Admission:

Admission to the major program in philosophy is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of PHI 101 and two additional courses in philosophy with a grade of at least C. The approval of the Department of Philosophy is required.

Philosophy Department Programs and Curricula

The Philosophy Major Curricula:

The philosophy major takes 16 courses in the Canisius College Core Curriculum. These include the General Studies, Area Studies and Major Course requirements.

Philosophy Minor Curricula:

Students may choose to concentrate their course work in a specific area, such as history of philosophy, ethics, metaphysics and epistemology, Thomistic philosophy, philosophy of religion, phenomenology and hermeneutics, Christian philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of science.

Philosophy in the All-College Honors Program:

The philosophy department in conjunction with the All-College Honors Program, offers Honors Philosophy I and II (HON 120 and 215) every year, and Honors seminars on a regular basis.

Other Programs:

The Philosophy Department routinely offers a dual major with any of the other departments in the humanities. Special arrangements can be made to accommodate students in any curriculum.

Philosophy majors may participate in the All -College Honors Program and complete their degree requirements at the same time. Because Honors classes count towards major requirements, students thrive at Canisius without falling behind.
