Canisius offers the only 4 year physical education major in the area. The program of Physical Education, Health, and Sport Studies is housed within the Department of Kinesiology in the NCATE accredited School of Education and Human Services. Our program fits the needs of students who want to teach as well as those who will pursue a career outside the classroom.
The Canisius Advantage
Physical education majors can earn certifications to teach physical education and health to children in grades kindergarden through 12. What’s more, successful completion of our physical education program allows graduates to coach any sport in any New York State school.
Canisius students also benefit from many other professional development opportunities we have built into our program, including:
- Physical Best -- Childhood fitness specialist
- ASEP -- American Sport Education Program certification
- Resume, cover letter, and practice interview
- Physical Education/Health Majors Club
- Local, state, and national conferences
As well as:
- American Red Cross & Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and water safety instructor.
Non-teaching certification programs prepare students for work in a range of fields including management and marketing, sport psychology or graduate school.
