Program Overview

The pre-medical and pre-health program at Canisius College supports students entering the full range of medical and health professional schools - allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dental, optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy, chiropractic and other programs. Rates vary by year and by program, but approximately 90% of students applying get accepted into these programs.

Pre-med/pre-health is not a specific major but rather a whole range of advising and involvement activities meant to assist students in meeting the myriad of course and other expectations determined by the various medical and health professional schools. Students are able to major in any discipline they wish and are encouraged to study whatever area they might be passionate about. The Pre-Medical Center will assist students in identifying and scheduling prerequisite courses as needed for their desired profession.

Students volunteer and shadow physicians and other medical professionals at all of the major hospitals and major medical practices in the greater Buffalo region.

Students do internships and research on and off campus. Off-campus sites include the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and major universities around the country, including, Case-Western Reserve University, Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
