Time line for Freshmen:
- Good grades (anyone will a GPA of 2.99 or less) Contact me so we can talk about options.
- Get involved (clubs, volunteer) this can wait until the summer of your freshmen year.

Time line for Sophomores:
- Good grades (anyone will a GPA of 2.99 or less) Contact me so we can talk about options.
- Get involved: volunteer
- Look for leadership roles (coordinate, organize)
- Look for research opportunities (talk with faculty) find out what you are interestedin.
- If possible start shadowing doctors.
- What You Need To Do
Summer time: due research/shadow doctors etc.
Early Assurance Program: Anyone interested in Early Assurance Medical (UB and Upstate, Syracuse) Early Assurance Dental (UB). If you are interested, contact me (Cindy Travers, traversc@canisius.edu, 888-3208) to discuss your options.
- Medical for UB: Sophomore with a 1400 SAT and a GPA of 3.75.
- Medical for Upstate: Sophomore with a 1300 SAT and a GPA of 3.5.
- Dental for UB: Sophomore No SAT score, but top 10% of your high school class, GPA of 3.75.
Time line for Juniors:
- Good grades (anyone will a GPA of 2.99 or less) Contact me so we can talk about options.
- Volunteer; short and long term opportunities, professional schools are looking for commitment. One or two opportunities long term are more important then, 10 opportunities with little time commitment involved.
- Leadership roles (club officers, coordinate and organize events)
- Research
Shadow doctors/dentists etc Time line for Juniors and Seniors applying to a health professional schools
- End of September PreMed/Health meeting: Review of how to apply to a health professional school. Med/Den and Opt students must go through the HSARC committee. Other health professional students may schedule an appointment with the PreMed office to go over the steps necessary for you to apply to.
- Meeting: Review of paperwork needed for HSARC
- Prep Course -Think about taking a prep course for your exam: MCAT, DAT, OAT etc.
- Kaplin and Princeton Review offer MCAT courses on Campus.
- MCAT prep course costs include a discount for Canisius students.
- MCAT exam should be scheduled for April. DAT, OAT, and GRE, students have more flexibility with these exams. Students should plan on taking them within 12 months of applying to their respective health professional school.
- End of November (before Thanksgiving Break) turn in: Paperwork for HSARC meeting.
- Mid January HSARC will announce their recommendation to the student.
- February- Personal Statement Workshop (date and time TBA) If you can not attend the workshop. Have the PreHealth Advisors, Faculty member, Career Center review your personal statement. Personal Statements are important always have someone review your statement before you submit it. Your Personal Statement is your last opportunity to convince a school to give you an interview. It is important!!!!
- April - Students should be taking the MCAT , the DAT, OAT and GRE can be taken within one year of applying to the appropriate schools.
- Mid May - Students will be able to fill out their AMCAS and/or AACOMAS applications in mid May.
- June 1 – Submit AMCAS and/or AACOMAS application(s).
Time line for Seniors:
- January - August- Students need to schedule two (2) individual mock interviews. One with a doctor and one with the Career Center. Contact information for the doctor can be obtained through the PreMed Office.
- August- It is possible to receive an interview from a medical school in August.
- If you have not had any interviews by March it is time to consider plan B. You may still get an interview but it is getting late in the year.
- March is a good time to consider other educational programs and apply.
- Younger classmates can benefit from your experiences. You should offer suggestions and advise on how to:
- Find shadowing opportunities?
- Find research opportunities?
- Where did you volunteer?
- Did you do a service trip(s)?
