program_overview

Canisius College offers an early assurance program to students planning to attend health professional schools.  The Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Early Assurance Programs at Canisius are offered in conjunction with the SUNY Medical School and Dental School, and the SUNY Medical School at Syracuse.  Qualifying students may apply to these schools in their sophomore year.

Students accepted by the Early Assurance Program are not required to take the Medical College Admission test or the Dental Admission Test in the junior or senior year, and are guaranteed admission to the medical or dental school after obtaining their bachelor's degrees.  Canisius also offers seven-year Joint Degree programs with selected professional schools.

In addition to the courses required in the student's major, all students fulfill the liberal arts course requirements of the core curriculum.

If accepted into any of the programs, the student will be guaranteed admission upon earning a BS from Canisius at the required G.PA.  For early assurance medical, the student will not be required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).  For early assurance dental, the student will be required to obtain a certain score on the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).

Joint degree programs
Canisius College joint degree programs offer the option of three years of study at Canisius followed by a transfer to selected medical professional schools to complete the professional degree in a reduced amount of time.

Canisius College offers joint degree programs in conjunction with:
  • Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • SUNY at Buffalo Dental School
  • SUNY College of Optometry
  • New York College of Podiatric Medicine
  • Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.
These programs require that the student be in the top 10 percent of their high school class, have combined SAT scores of 1200 and a SAT Math score of 600.  The student spends the first three years of study at Canisius College and then enters the professional program of choice.  The BS degree from Canisius is earned after the first year of professional school.  The professional degree, DO, DDS, DPM or OD, is earned after the completion of the fourth year of professional school.  The program cuts a full year from the time it usually takes to earn both the undergraduate and the professional degree.  While at Canisius, the student must remain in good academic standing, usually a GPA of 3.5, and work with mentors in the chosen field to provide clinical and research experience.  Candidates for the DO degree must score 26 on the Medical College Admission Test.
