People often refer to Canisius College as "the Canisius family" and the meaning of that phrase is evident every day to those of us who work and study here. We are not separate groups of faculty, students and staff who merely occupy the same classrooms. Rather we are one community joined in a common pursuit. Whether working side-by-side in the classroom or in community service, together we are trying to understand the world and the ways in which we can change it for the better.
The benefits of this approach to learning are most evident in the accomplishments of our alumni, who include some of our nation's most distinguished physicians, attorneys, educators, business executives and community leaders. Many of them also give back to the students who come after them by providing advice on career preparation, offering internship opportunities and jobs.
This is a reflection of the Jesuit tradition, which encourages us to be men and women for others by using our talents to assist our brothers and sisters. St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Peter Canisius and other early members of the Society of Jesus realized the enduring value of this philosophy and now, more than 500 years later, we are living out its promise.
Additionally, the strength of a Canisius education lies in its broad core curriculum, which is relevant to many professions and has lasting value. The college's core curriculum is one reason our alumni are so well suited to the challenges of their chosen field. It is also why a Jesuit education has become synonymous with the highest intellectual standards, evident at Canisius and its 27 sister institutions in the U.S., including Georgetown, Holy Cross and Boston College.
As president of Canisius College, I invite you to become part of that living heritage and to join the distinguished graduates of the Canisius family.
