Incident Investigation
Timely Reporting
Police Communication

When a crime is reported to Public Safety, an officer will initiate a preliminary investigation. The complainant will be interviewed by the officer so basic information about the incident can be obtained. If the officer determines that a crime has occurred, he/she will complete an incident report which outlines the incident and includes such information as the complainant’s name and address, suspect information, witness information and other information pertinent to the investigation. If the case is not brought to a satisfactory conclusion following a preliminary investigation, the incident report is forwarded to a Public Safety investigator for a follow-up investigation. In the event that a reported crime is a violent felony offense, the city of Buffalo Police Department will be notified pursuant to a formal agreement between both agencies.
