Blue Light Telephones

Several exterior Blue Light Emergency Phones are located throughout the campus. These phones are easily identified by a blue light mounted directly above them. They can be used to report actual or suspected criminal incidents, fires and/or medical emergencies to Public Safety. They may also be used to request a shuttle van.

To operate the phone, briefly depress and release the red button on the panel. The phone will automatically dial the Public Safety dispatcher. When the dispatcher answers, talk in your normal tone of voice to relay your message. If for some reason you don't respond verbally, a uniformed officer will respond to the phone location to investigate. Calls will automatically disconnect in 3 minutes.

Motorist Assistance Program

Public Safety officers will assist students, faculty and staff if your keys are locked inside the vehicle, you need gas, air for low tires or a jump start. Officers will also call your auto club and wait with you if you are in the campus area late at night.

R.A.I.N. (Respond, Assess, Isolate, Notify)

Gary Everett, Director of Public Safety, presents R.A.I.N. training that instructs students, faculty and staff on what to do the first three minutes of a critical incident on campus. Anyone interested in the class can e-mail Gary Everett.

VIN Etch Program

The VIN Etch program is the permanent etching of your vehicle's federally-registered Vehicle Identification Number on the windows of your vehicle. Etching the VIN onto the windows of your car makes it less desirable to professional car thieves and helps recover the vehicle if it is stolen. There is no cost to you.

If you are a Canisius College student or employee and you are interested in participating in the VIN Etch program, click here to complete the application form and a crime prevention officer will contact you about the next VIN Etch session on campus.

Whistle Program

Keychain Whistles are available for each student to alert public safety in case of an emergency. Students, faculty and staff along with public safety will know someone needs assistance when they hear a whistle. It's important that the whistles are used in real emergencies and not for false alarms. The whistles are another great way for the Canisius Community to stay safe. The Public Safety phone number is printed on the whistle. Whistles are available in the Student Activites office as well as Public Safety.
