Public Safety
Public Safety Services
Canisius College Department of Public Safety is committed to the safety of all students, faculty and staff. In order to maintain and monitor safety, the following services are provided by Public Safety.
Public Safety Bike Patrol
The Department currently has six Public Safety Officers that have been trained and certified by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council. The bikes are used for routine patrol and special events and are well received by the community.
Blue Light Telephones
Several exterior Blue Light Emergency Phones are located throughout the campus. These phones are easily identified by a blue light mounted directly above them. They can be used to report actual or suspected criminal incidents, fires and/or medical emergencies to Public Safety. They may also be used to request a shuttle van.
Fingerprinting Services
Several times each semester the department of public safety provides free fingerprinting services for those students who are required to be fingerprinted for NYS teacher certification.
Motorist Assistance Program
Public Safety officers will assist students, faculty and staff if your keys are locked inside the vehicle, you need gas, air for low tires or a jump start. Officers will also call your auto club and wait with you if you are in the campus area late at night.
Security Alarm Systems
A state-of-the-art intrusion and panic alarm system alerts the Public Safety Office to emergencies. Most college owned buildings in the campus area are monitored through this system.
Security Cameras
There are more than 160 interior and exterior public areas on campus that are monitored by closed circuit video cameras.
Sexual Assault Education
Canisius College presents a number of workshops for the campus community which address the issues of stranger rape, acquaintance rape and other forcible and non-forcible sex offenses. Additionally, the college provides training to selected staff members so they may respond properly to a victim’s need for assistance.

V.I.P.
The Valuables Identification Program is a free program which enables you to engrave your valuable property with your drivers license number, create an inventory list of your property and obtain a photographic record of your property. Electric engraving pens are available for loan at the public safety office.
VIN Etch Program
The VIN Etch program is the permanent etching of your vehicle's federally-registered Vehicle Identification Number on the windows of your vehicle. Etching the VIN onto the windows of your car makes it less desirable to professional car thieves and helps recover the vehicle if it is stolen. There is no cost to you.
If you are a Canisius College student or employee and you are interested in participating in the VIN Etch program, click here to complete the application form and a crime prevention officer will contact you about the next VIN Etch session on campus.
Whistle Program
Keychain Whistles are available for each student to alert public safety in case of an emergency. Whistles are available in the Student Activites office as well as Public Safety.
