Crimes which occur on campus or in the campus area that are reported to Public Safety are documented through an incident report. Public Safety routinely receives, solicits and documents pertinent campus related crime information from other law enforcement. In addition, campus offices such as Residence Life, Student Affairs, Student Activities, Student Health, Campus Ministry and the Counseling Center provide statistical information regarding criminal offenses. Collectively the information is tabulated and included in the campus crime statistic section of the Annual Security Report. When Public Safety receives information about a serious criminal incident, such as those which appear in the crime statistics section, the incident is evaluated for its impact in the community. If it is determined that the incident poses a danger to the campus community, the department may utilize the following timely notification measures to inform the campus community about the incident:
Special Alerts:
When circumstances require immediate notification throughout the campus community, written and electronic special alerts which outline the incident are prepared and distributed.
Public Safety Blotter:
The student newspaper, The Griffin, publishes a weekly summary of criminal incidents which were reported to Public Safety during the preceding week.
Information Hotline:
The Department of Public Safety maintains a 24-hour information hotline that callers may use to obtain recorded information about significant incidents recently reported to Public Safety. In addition, callers may use the hotline to report non-emergency information about criminal activity that has occurred on or near campus. To reach the Public Safety information hotline call Ext. 2400.
