Mission Statement

Our state of the art Literacy Center opened in August 2004. It was completed after several years of work by the dedicated staff of the Graduate Literacy Program and the Canisius administration to provide an expert space to both train literacy specialist and provide literacy education to the community.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Literacy Center at Canisius is to serve as a comprehensive literacy and reading instruction center, based on a balanced approach to literacy and research-based practices. Specifically, the Center will serve as:

  1. A center for pre-service and in-service teacher training.
  2. A community-based center offering literacy programs and assistance to families and their children in the local community.
  3. A linkage for school districts and community organizations that have an interest in family literacy and reading excellence.
  4. A research/developmental center to document effective practices based on rigorous research methods.
