Dear Parents, Classroom Teachers and School Administrators:
The Canisius College Graduate Literacy Program is accepting applications for literacy diagnostic assessments, grades 1-12. Graduate candidates at Canisius who are fulfilling a master’s degree as a literacy specialist in the Graduate Literacy Program provide diagnostic and assessment services. This clinical practicum is a required course in the Graduate Literacy Program and is supervised by a full-time tenured professor.
Children who participate in diagnostic/assessment program usually attend twice a week, for 8-10 weeks during the fall or spring semesters, or for 2-3 consecutive weeks during the summer. Services are provided in the Literacy Center, which is conveniently located on the Canisius College campus. Parents are required to provide transportation.
The literacy assessment consists of a series of professional tests that will be administered to determine a child's current literacy proficiency, and to gather specific details on their particular reading strengths and weaknesses. Once the diagnosis is complete, the graduate candidate will utilize a variety of teaching skills and begin implementing effective methods and strategies that will help advance the child's literacy development. A full and comprehensive report regarding the child's current reading ability will be sent to each participant's parent(s). This report will include, tests that were administered, a detailed analysis of the results, as well as provide recommendations for at home, in school and in the classroom. Parents will be strongly encouraged to share the report with the child's school and classroom teacher.
The fee for this service is $150.00; a limited number of full and partial scholarships are available based on need and on the amount of funds available. To secure a spot on our waiting list, we will need to receive a completed application. Generally clients are placed one semester after they apply. Once a parent has committed to a particular schedule, fees will be processed and NO REFUNDS will be made except for extenuating circumstances.
The Literacy Center at Canisius also offers one-on-one tutoring for children grade 1-12. Tutoring services are usually held two evenings a week after school (10 - 1 and 1/2 hour sessions) or on Saturdays (10 - 1 and 1/2 hour sessions). The center's one-on-one tutoring program consists of approximately 15-20 hours of tutoring for $50, and again a limited number of scholarships will be made available. For more information on continued services visit the Literacy Center's web site.
Feel free to contact Lisa Fischer at (716) 888-3728 with any questions you may have.
We look forward to the possibility of working with you and your child.
