The Department of Public Safety, composed of 24 officers and over 15 staff, serves the Canisius College community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  They continuously patrol our campus on foot, by bicycle, and by car.  In addition to the on-campus presence of trained officers, Canisius offers other safety features for the convenience and comfort of the students.

Most residence facilities are equipped with a 24-hour swipe card of keypad security access, which means that only the residents of that facility may enter.  Another feature is the blue light phone system located on campus.  Any student experiencing an emergency, including medical emergencies, may pick up a blue light phone and dial extension 711 or 2330 and an officer will be immediately dispatched.  The blue light phones may also be used by students in non-emergency situations, such as lockouts.

Another safety feature is our campus shuttle, available to students from 5:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.  Although the tunnels and walkways between buildings often eliminate the need to go outside, students who do need to travel outdoors in the evening may call the Public Safety shuttle at extension 3111 and they will be transported door-to-door.

The Department of Public Safety has several safety initiatives that it is currently offering.  One such initiative, Rape Aggression Defense, or R.A.D. is a non-traditional self defense program for women.  If you are interested, please contact Officer D'arcangelo at extension 2330.  In addition to R.A.D., Public Safety also provides a safety orientation program for freshmen and a Motorist Assistance Program directed at helping with vehicle lockouts, battery jumps, and air, for example.
