ALANA Performance Troupe
The dynamic Canisius College Performance Troupe, sponsored by the ALANA Student Center (ASC), is an amazing ensemble of undergraduate students which interprets and performs selected works of poetry, song lyrics, and scenes from plays. Former Troupe members occasionally perform with the ensemble. Since the creation of the Troupe in 1998 by the director of ASC, the works performed are primarily designed and/or selected to bring attention to urban issues, particularly those faced by many African Americans. Through their efforts, both individually and as a group, the Troupe strives to bring a greater appreciation of cross-cultural literature to audiences. The Troupe also seeks to address the needs and concerns of students who have trouble seeing the value of completing their education both at the high school and college level.
In addition to performances at Canisius, the Troupe also performs at area high schools and other community venues, including Bennett High School, Grover Cleveland High School, McKinley High School, Buffalo State College, D’Youville College, University at Buffalo, Em Tea Coffee Cup Café, Buffalo’s The Screening Room, and the Langston Hughes Institute. When possible, a performance is accompanied by live music and a dance interpretation. Each performance ends with a question and answer session for audience members. These events are free and usually open to the general public.
Involvement with the Troupe entails a significant commitment to the project, and is a great learning opportunity for the student interpreters. Members volunteer and rehearse for two to three months; they spend weekdays and weekends learning about and enjoying the works they have chosen, as well as sharing this engaging literature with others. For some Troupe members, this is their first experience performing in front of a live audience. Additionally, some of the members also perform their own work.
