General Emergency Recommendations
It is important to remember these key points in any emergency situation:
Check the Scene
Before responding to any ill, injured, or emotionally upset person, determine the safety of the situation or scene before approaching the victim or victims. Protecting personal safety and the safety of bystanders is critical.
Call for Help
Once the situation or scene is judged safe, priority must be given to the ill or injured person or persons. The first person on the scene should if at all possible, stay with the person in need and direct someone else to call Public Safety. f there is no one to make the call, determine if the victim is awake and alert. If the person is not responding, leave them briefly to call for assistance and return immediately. It is very important to get trained emergency response personnel to the scene as soon as possible, so do not delay in calling for help. Do not try to manage the emergency situation without the support to trained emergency responders.
Assist the Victim
Once the call is made for help, return to the victim and do what you can to assist them.
