Dolores Huerta:

  • Co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar E. Chavez, now known as the United Farm Workers Union.
  • Organized the Agricultural Workers Association, which became the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and later merged with the National Farm Workers Association.
  • Directed the UFW’s national grape boycott, resulting in a three-year collective bargaining agreement with the grape growers.
  • Established the first health and pension plans for farm workers.
  • Worked to eliminate toxic pesticides that threaten farm workers, consumers and the environment.
  • Founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation to create grassroots communities and teach organizing. The Dolores Huerta Foundation aims to “inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities to attain social justice.”
  • Worked actively in the Civil Rights movement.
  • Works to enhance the role of women in positions of prominence in society.
The Justice in Action (JIA) work group is comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators who work to coordinate, publicize, and develop initiatives that educate and promote awareness about justice issues.

Previous Presentation: Kathleen Maas Weigert, Executive Director of the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service at Georgetown University came to Canisius College to speak on "Educating for the Common Good: Citizenship, Social Justice, and Service-Learning." The Social Justice Round table hosted four professors who presented on "The Commitment to Justice in Higher Education." The professors included Dr. Jane Fisher, Dr. Jonathan Lawrence, Dr. Tanya Loughead, and Dr. Erin Robinson.
