Service is at the heart of Jesuit education because it calls us to be “men and women for others.” We are called to commit ourselves to making a difference in society and to working for change. Service to others gives us an opportunity to reflect on the broader issues and the social injustices that affect our society. So! We have found a wonderful pedagogical method by which to do this. It is service-learning.
F.A.Q.’s
Where do I find the forms that I need to fill out? All of the forms are available on our Student Forms page.
How many hours of service do I have to give? Your service requirement is determined by your professor. While requirements typically range from 15 to 20 hours, each professor has individual specifications for each class.
What if I have to do S-L for two classes? DO NOT DOUBLE YOUR HOURS! The hours you do can apply to more than one class; just find an agency that pertains to both courses you're taking. Simply make sure you direct your reflection towards each individual class.
Where can I find a list of service sites? A complete list of agencies is available on the Service Sites page.
How do I get to my agency? Many of the available agencies are within walking distance of Canisius College. A large number of sites are also easily accessible from the Main St. Metro Rail, which can be used for free with your Canisius College NFTA pass. Students are also welcome to make other transportation arrangements.
I live in Canada; can I do my service there? Yes, as long as you receive approval from Sr. Pat and your professor. Usually this will include a letter from your supervisor on organization letterhead, simply for verification.
Who do I contact with any questions or concerns? If you have any problems, please email them to bradyp@canisius.eduor call Sr. Pat Brady at 716-888-2177. You can also stop by the S-L office, OM 005.
