Welcome to my life! My name is Laurie Cummins and I am a first-year student in the Master of Sport Administration program here at Canisius College. I am also one of two Graduate Assistants for the program who work for our director, Staci Carney Studesville.
I began the program in May 2006, getting a couple classes under my belt during the summer. By August, I had a job with the Buffalo Bills Promotional Team, working events and game days, supervised by fellow MSA student Andrea Prinzbach. Not long after that, I was offered the Graduate Assistantship, which I readily accepted because I knew it would provide me with valuable experience and networking opportunities. After mere months, it has already done just that and more.
My daily routine consists of coming into the MSA office mid-morning, where I first check and respond to emails from current students and alumni. Todd and I discuss what needs to be done and what each of us is working on, so we can efficiently share our duties. We take care of any administrative tasks Staci needs completed, from scheduling meetings to emails to making copies. We also update the job/internship postings and the Web site to keep everyone informed of the latest news and events. We have also been trying to update the Alumni directory, which requires tracking down MSA Alumni to see what they are currently doing and where. It is a great way to meet and network with some very successful people who came out of this program. Seeing the great jobs our Alumni hold reassures me that I made the right choice for a graduate school.
I recently started a part-time internship with the Buffalo Bills Media Relations department, so I fit that in two or three days each week as well. Along with both jobs, I am off to class a few evenings each week from 6-9 pm. On the nights I don’t have class, I am usually reading or doing homework to stay on top of my work. My life is pretty busy, but I like it that way; it means I am involved in as much as possible. As Staci always tells her students, “you get as much out of this program as you put into it.” I plan on getting the most I can.
