

The Special Education Master of Science Degree Program at Canisius is designed for teachers whose concentration is centered on the needs of students with disabilities; placing a strong emphasis on theory, research, and practicum experience. The curriculum enables candidates to develop an understanding of etiology, related psychological and social factors, and techniques proven effective for teaching students with diverse learning needs. The core classes provide a broad foundation of the field of special education and each area of concentration provides in depth study of a specific type of disability.
The graduate program in Special Education requires students to meet preset course requirements based on New York State Certification mandates and the New York State Education Department approved Master of Science Degree in Special Education. The program leads to initial and/or professional teacher certification Students are required to participate in practicum and research endeavors during each component of the program. The graduate program is comprised of four components:
Areas of concentration include: Mild Disabilities Grades 1-6, Behavioral/Severe Disabilities Grades 1-6, and Adolescence Grades 7-12.
This program meets the requirements for Professional Certification in New York State. It is not appropriate for teachers seeking special education certification in Canada.
