ADULT ACADEMIC SERVICES (Bagen 103 Ext. 2850)
New and continuing students are encouraged to take advantage of the academic and support services available to them. The Associate Dean is available to provide assistance in planning schedules, registering for courses and resolving other academic issues.

ADVISEMENT CENTER
(Bagen 103 Ext. 2148)
www.canisius.edu/student_advise

First year students are assigned an academic advisor at summer Orientation. Every attempt is made at that point to “match” a student to an advisor in his/her intended major.

First year students are required to meet with their advisors at least twice during each of their first two semesters: first, at mid-semester to discuss academic progress; and second, toward the end of the semester to discuss scheduling and registration. However, students are encouraged to contact their advisors at any time during the year should academic or other difficulties arise.

Although a great deal of assistance is available, you are ultimately responsible for selecting and registering for courses. Students may inquire in the center or with the appropriate Associate Dean about tools to assist them in planning schedules and tracking degree pursuit.

  • Opportunities for student service to those in need
  • Promotion of ethical values
  • Putting into practice Catholic Social Teaching especially in areas of social justice and peace in the world

Canisius for Buffalo: Volunteer Services
Campus Ministry seeks to live out the Jesuit mission of cultivating “men and women for others” through encouraging students to do volunteer service in the community of Buffalo and beyond. Students participate in group service projects, individual placements at social service agencies and hospitals, and post-graduate volunteer programs. For example, Canisius students serve meals at a local soup kitchen, spend time with local senior citizens, help renovate homes in downtown Buffalo, and tutor students at a nearby youth and family center or at the school for the deaf only minutes from the college. Students spend quality time with runaway youth at local shelters, with refugees, and with young people at risk. They also visit the elderly and work with patients at nearby hospitals. Service Interns are students who work with the professional staff to organize and promote service activities on campus.

Out of Town Service Trips
Campus Ministry organizes students to go on service trips to help those in need. These trips usually take place during winter break, spring break, or right after the second semester.  The trips are organized around four cornerstones: service to those in need, simple living, reflection and prayer, and community. Recently, students have journeyed to New York City, Appalachia, Detroit, Washington D.C., Jamaica, and Mexico City.

Retreats for Students
Our retreat programs are designed to help students nourish their spiritual side through different models and formats that suit hectic schedules and offer sought-after respites. Students deal with spiritual questions, nourish their faith, and form community. Our retreats are open to all students of any faith or spiritual formation. Cost should not keep someone from making a retreat. Scholarships are available if needed. In the fall there are special one-day Saturday retreats for first year students.  Throughout the year, there are various weekend retreats. The popular Kairos retreat is offered several times a year and helps people reflect on their life, nurture their spirituality and faith, and form community with others.  Other Ignatian retreats of a weekend or more offer students a time and place to develop their prayer life in a setting that is quite and peaceful.  The list of retreats from last year includes the following:
  • Kairos
  • Ignis (for first year and transfer students
  • Ignatian (a quiet retreat with individual direction)
  • Always our Children
  • Awaken
  • The Wanderer
  • Pre-med Retreat
  • Live Strong (for those dealing with illness and death in their immediate families)
  • The Senior Retreat (during senior week)

www.canisius.edu/careercenter
Monday 8:30 a.m.–7 p.m.
Tuesday–Friday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Imagine a project which will require at least 60,000 hours of work and which will result in a profit of at least $2,500,000. You would want to plan carefully if you were in charge of that project, wouldn’t you? You are in charge! The project is your career. After you graduate, you’ll work those hours and you’ll earn that money as a salary. Common sense tells you that something as big and important as your “project” ought to receive some hours of your attention to ensure it comes out right.

It’s too important to wait until you graduate or even until your senior year before you make decisions concerning it. There are things you can do during each of your years to prepare for your career. Start thinking about your future NOW.
The Career Center can assist you with services that will help you choose a major, identify a specific career, obtain good part-time summer jobs, secure an internship, write a resume, practice interviewing, and secure that career position once you graduate.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS (Old Main, Room 102 Ext. 2130)

The Community Relations Committee is the College’s “bridge” between the campus community and the Buffalo residents who live in the neighborhoods surrounding Canisius. The Committee helps students to be good neighbors with the permanent residents, mediates conflicts that do occur, and also helps to organize service projects which benefit the neighborhood. The Committee maintains a roster of current referral services for the benefit of students who live in the area and provides supportive assistance to those who live in the neighborhood.

DISABILITIES SUPPORT SERVICES (Old Main, Room 04 Ext. 3748)
Office Hours: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
www.canisius.edu/dss

Canisius is committed to ensuring the accessibility of all of its programs and providing the environment necessary for a quality education. DSS works to facilitate students’ independence, encourage self-determination, emphasize accommodations rather than limitations, and create a comprehensively accessible environment.

Students requesting academic and non-academic accommodations must register with DSS, complete the DSS intake form, and provide proper documentation by a licensed or certified official that states the disability. Non-academic accommodations may include, but are not limited to, campus housing through residence life, dietary needs, and shuttle services.

FINANCIAL AID (Old Main, Room 105 Ext. 2300)
www.canisius.edu/finaid

The Student Financial Aid (SFA) Office staff works with students and parents to determine financial need.  Based on this need, the Office puts together a comprehensive financial aid package of grants, loans, and student employment.  The Student Financial Aid staff will also advise families on how to meet educational expenses. Students who delay in responding to the SFA Office risk not having their financial aid credited to their bill.  Returning students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by April 15 for the following academic year.

The disbursement of Financial Aid requires adherence to various State and Federal regulations.  At times during the academic year, a student’s financial aid package may change due to changes in these regulations.  Students will be notified by the SFA Office, in writing, when changes occur.

August through May when undergraduate classes are in session

Physician Clinic
Hours found on Health Center website

The Health Center strives to provide high quality health care to students in a confidential, comfortable, and caring environment. The staff is committed to offering students individualized and efficient service. Each student encounter is seen as opportunity to care for and to educate the whole student; focusing on lifestyle choices today and current and future health. Students are motivated to take responsibility for their health and to become knowledgeable consumers of health care.

As an urgent care clinic, the center treats minor, episodic illnesses, and injuries common to college students. The Health Center offers free laboratory testing services on site such as quick strep test, influenza testing, urine testing and screening for anemia. If indicated, blood, or other specimens are collected and sent off campus to Quest  Diagnostic Laboratories for further testing.  Laboratory samples sent off campus for processing will be billed to the student’s health insurance. The Health Center carries over the counter medications to relieve the discomforts associated with the common cold, sore throat, flu, stomach upset and muscle aches and pains. The center does not dispense prescription medications.  Students are referred to a local pharmacy for prescription medication. Students who take a prescription medication regularly must bring enough medication with them to campus. The college physician does not write for prescription refills ordered by another physician.  No appointment is needed to see the Health Center nurse. Appointments are required to see the college physician. Student wishing to make a physician appointment must be seen by the nurse first.  Students needing more specialized care are referred by the Health Center to a hospital emergency room or a local physician. Services in the center are free, unless otherwise noted.

The Health Center is equipped with an AED.

After Hours Care
Students who are sick or injured on the weekends, evenings or nights, when the Health Center is closed, should contact Public Safety at ext. 2330 to arrange transportation to a local hospital emergency room.  Students in need of medical care after hours but not in need of emergency room care, can log onto the Health Center web site for a list of urgent care centers that treat Canisius students.

Physical Examination Requirement
All full time undergraduate students, including international students, are required to submit a competed physical examination form to the Health Center prior to class attendance.  This form is mailed to all newly deposited students from the Dean of Students.  Students who do not submit the required physical examination form will be unable to register for future study at the college.

The Health Center does offer physical examination services to students for a fee.  The Health Center web site lists the fee and information on how to schedule a physical examination appointment.

Immunizations
New York State Public Health Law 2165 and 2167 require all college students, graduate and undergraduate students to demonstrate proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella and to submit proof of meningococcal vaccine or a signed refusal of meningococcal vaccination to the Health Center prior to the first of day of classes.

These laws protect the health and safety of all members of the campus and therefore are strictly enforced. Any student who does not submit the required immunization information will be excluded from class and the residence halls and prevented from further registration at Canisius. Immunization forms are mailed to all newly deposited students from the Dean of Students.  Forms are also available on the Health Center website.

The Health Center offers the required immunizations for class attendance. The web site lists the vaccines, fee and information on how to schedule a vaccination appointment. The Health Center offers flu shots each year in the fall. The date and time for the flu shot clinic is found on the website.

Special Needs
Students with special health or accommodation needs are encouraged to contact DSS at (716) 888-3748 to arrange accommodations.

Medical Emergencies
For medical emergencies on campus, dial 711 or ext. 2330.  A public safety officer will be dispatched to the scene along with an ambulance. Public Safety is trained in first aid, CPR,  and equipped with an AED.

It is very important that all students provide the Health Center with emergency contact information.  Without this information, the college may have difficulty notifying your family, guardian or friend in the event you are sick or injured. Please keep your emergency contact information up to date.

Health Insurance Coverage
Canisius strongly recommends that all students have health insurance. Students must submit a copy of their health insurance card to the Health Center and carry the card while on campus. Students should know how their health insurance works and what their responsibility is to notify the company of medical expenses incurred. Students should contact the member service department of their insurance company to learn how their plan works.

Students in need of health insurance can purchase a sickness and accident plan written specifically for Canisius students.  Information about the plan, benefits, eligibility, enrollment procedures and cost can be found on Health Center website.

International students, studying on a visa, are required by Canisius to purchase a health insurance plan designed to meet the health insurance needs of international students studying in the United States.  Information about this mandatory plan is available in the International Student Programs Office.

Accident Insurance
All full time undergraduates are covered under a college sponsored accident plan.  This coverage assist with payment of medical expenses related to accidents that occur either on or off campus. The plan also includes an accidental death benefit.

For more detailed information about the accident insurance, contact the Health Center.

Canisius College is not responsible for payment of medical expenses incurred by Canisius students.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES/ITS
(Wehle Technology Center, First Floor Ext. 2440)
www.canisius.edu/its

Instructional computing facilities include over 350 personal computers located in student computer laboratories.  Macintosh and Windows compatible personal computers are equipped with electronic mail, internet access, word processing, spreadsheet software, and access to laser printers.

The main student computer facility is located in the lower level of Bouwhuis Library.  The computer lab closes 15 minutes before Library closing.  Reger Computer Lab (OM 115), Health Science Computer Lab (205), Koessler Computer Lab (OM 119), and Lyons Mac Lab (LY 312) are generally scheduled for courses but are available for general student access during times of peak demand when not scheduled for classroom training.  Software assistance is provided in the labs by student consultants who can be identified by their red uniform shirts.  Operating hours for all the computer labs are posted in each lab, are available on the Web at www.canisius.edu/its/facilities.html, and are accessible by phone at 888-3213.

In addition to computer labs, laptop computers are available within Bouwhuis Library for use within the building. Computers are also available for e-mail and web surfing at six Internet Plazas (Old Main first floor, Student Center lower level, Health Science ground floor, Koessler Athletic Center first floor, Lyons Hall first floor, and Palisano main floor).

All students must use College computers with the account they are assigned. Users of Canisius computer and network facilities are expected to observe the Conditions for Use of Canisius College Computer and Network Facilities that follow. Among other provisions, the Conditions prohibit illegal use, storage, or transmission of unauthorized copyrighted material. Most downloaded music available through Kazaa, Gnutella, or similar services is copyrighted material. Violation of the policy will result in loss of use of Canisius College Computer and Network Facilities as well as other disciplinary actions.

Students may use electronic mail to communicate with other members of the Canisius community or with others off-campus through the Internet. Canisius College routinely uses email as an official means of communication with students. Each student, upon enrolling, is issued a Canisius email account with an address in the canisius.edu domain.  This is the account used for College business, instruction, and official communications to students.  Students are expected to regularly check their account for College communications.

Conditions for Use of Canisius College Computer and Network Facilities

I. Guiding Principles
Canisius College computing and network resources are to be used for College-related research, instruction, learning, enrichment, dissemination of scholarly information, and administrative activities. The computing and network facilities of the College are limited and should be used wisely and carefully with consideration for the needs of others. Computers and network systems offer powerful tools for communication among members of the community and of communities outside the College. When used appropriately, these tools can enhance dialog and collaboration. Unlawful or inappropriate use of these resources, however, can infringe on the rights of others. The College expects faculty, staff, and students to use electronic resources in a lawful and responsible manner to support the College mission of education, research, service.

II. Conditions
1. Canisius College computer users shall use the college’s computer and network facilities in a responsible manner consistent with the instructional, research, and administrative goals of the College.

Discussion
For example[1], Canisius College computer users shall use computer and network facilities in a manner consistent with all applicable Canisius College handbooks and policies including the Harassment Policy and the Community Standards for Students. Canisius College computer users are subject to all applicable federal, state, and local law. Student web authors will ensure that their Web pages do not violate or directly link to pages that violate these policies.  Computer users who access external networks from Canisius College will comply with the appropriate guidelines for use of those networks. Any personal use of Canisius College computer and network services by Canisius College employees shall not interfere with their official responsibilities and shall not violate any Canisius College practice or policy. Use of Canisius computing facilities for commercial, for-profit activities or for viewing or exchanging pornography is prohibited.

2. Computer users shall access Canisius computing facilities only with an authorized username and password.

Discussion
Computer users shall not send electronic mail messages, print files on shared printers, or access off-campus computing facilities without being properly “logged in” with an authorized username. Forgery or attempted forgery of electronic mail is prohibited. Computer users should protect their password as they would a cash card or credit card. Computer users should not share their username and password, and they should make sure that they properly “log out” of the computer when finished.

3. Computer users shall respect the privacy of others.

Discussion
Computer users shall not intentionally read the information in anyone else’s computer file(s), make copies of anyone else’s computer file(s), or write information back to anyone else’s computer file(s). Similarly, computer users shall not seek anyone else’s password or modify anyone else’s password. Canisius College computer users shall not use electronic mail, Internet chat, or other technological means to harass or threaten others.

4. Computer users shall respect the integrity of Canisius College computing systems and other computing systems available through the network.

Discussion
Computer users shall not develop or use programs, such as worms, viruses, trojan horses, and adware (collectively known as malware), that infiltrate a computing system at Canisius College or elsewhere, falsify the network identity of themselves or computer equipment, or damage software or computing equipment. Computer users will cooperate with directives from Information Technology Services to keep their systems up to date and use the tools provided by ITS to render malware harmless. Computer users shall not set up or operate computer servers without written authorization from Information Technology Services. Computer users shall observe all rules and regulations established for the use of computer laboratories and similar facilities on campus.

5.  Computer users shall respect the legal protection provided by copyright and use licenses.

Discussion
Computer users shall not make copies of a licensed computer program to avoid paying appropriate license fees. Users shall respect the copyright privileges of others on the Canisius College network and Internet. Canisius College computer users may make “Fair Use[2]” of copyrighted material, but they shall not otherwise download copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder. For example, users should be aware of copyright issues with respect to commercially available music or video. Unauthorized downloading of such material is usually prohibited by the copyright holder.

6.  Computer users shall refrain from engaging in wasteful practices.

Discussion
Computer users shall not send chain letters through electronic mail, print multiple copies of files, or unnecessarily hold laboratory workstations when others are waiting for these resources. In particular, the playing of games, recreational use of chat programs such as Instant Messenger, downloading entertainment media, or using networks for purely recreational purposes when others need computer resources for instruction, research, or administrative service represent irresponsible use of Canisius College computer and network facilities.

III. Additional Conditions for residential computer users
Users of the Canisius College Residence Hall Network (ResNet) are subject to the following additional conditions:
1. Only computers that have been registered for ResNet through the registration program may be connected to the network, and only one computer may be attached to each jack.  No hubs, hublets, wireless hubs, or similar signal splitting devices may be connected to ResNet.
2. ResNet services, equipment, wiring or jacks may not be altered nor extended beyond the location of their intended use.  For example, you may not provide Internet access to other users by using your networked computer as a bridge or gateway.
3. ResNet may not be used to provide access to the Internet by anyone not formally affiliated with the College, except by explicit written consent from College officials.
4. The College’s networks are shared resources.  Excessive or improper use of network resources that inhibits or interferes with the use of these networks by others is not permitted.
5. Users who connect computers to ResNet that are used as servers have the additional responsibility to respond to any use of their server that is in violation of this Acceptable Use Policy.
6. In no case shall the following types of servers be connected to ResNet:  DNS, DHCP, BOOTP, WINS, or any other server that manages network addresses.
7. Canisius College ITS shall have the sole authority to assign host names and network addresses to computers attached to ResNet. Thus, users may not manually configure their computers to use a host name or network address that is not assigned to them by Canisius College ITS.
8. Canisius College ITS reserves the right to immediately disconnect any computer that is sending disruptive signals to the network as a whole, whether because of a defective cable, Ethernet card, or other hardware/software problem.  It will be the student’s responsibility to correct any such problem before the computer can be again connected to ResNet.
9. Canisius College ITS reserves the right to immediately disconnect any computer temporarily for the purpose of network hardware troubleshooting, software troubleshooting, or security troubleshooting, and to enforce the Acceptable Use Policy.

IV. Privacy Not Guaranteed on College Network
The College’s communication systems are the property of the College and all communications are subject to review by appropriate and authorized College Personnel at any time. College Personnel should be aware that personal privacy in their use of the College’s communication systems or information sent to or from, or stored in, the College’s communication systems cannot be guaranteed in the event of legal or disciplinary proceedings.  Computer users should be aware that information may appear on system backups, and even the deletion of messages or files may not eliminate information from the system. Claims of copyright infringement of a work by its copyright holder will result in removal of offending materials from Canisius College computer systems under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Where it appears that the integrity, security or functionality of the College’s computer or network resources are at risk or in instances of abuse of College policies, standards, or local, state or federal laws, Canisius College reserves the right to take whatever actions it deems necessary (including, but not limited to monitoring activity and viewing files) to investigate and resolve the situation. In such instances, a written report of the findings will be forwarded to the appropriate College officials[3]. In order to assure continuity for academic and administrative departments, similar procedures may be used after an employee is separated from Canisius or is no longer able to perform the required duties.

V.  Disciplinary Action
In the event that computer users violate this policy, they shall be subject to disciplinary action, including
  • A direction that such misuse cease and desist,
  • A direction that the project be more carefully supervised by a member of the Canisius staff,
  • A requirement that the user reimburse the College or pay for computer and network resources,
  • Denying the user access to computer and network resource(s) temporarily or permanently, and/or
  • Other appropriate College disciplinary, criminal, or civil action.
Student questions about this policy should be directed to the Dean of Students. Others should contact Mark Castner, Director of Academic Computing and User Services at castner@canisius.edu.
    Approved September 26, 2001  •  Revised June 9, 2004
[1] Examples of use or misuse given in this and following sections are not meant to be exhaustive, but only to illustrate the policy. Portions of this policy have been adapted from other institutions of higher education including Georgetown University, Marquette University, and the University at Buffalo.

[2] Whether or not a given use is protected by this definition is based upon the following considerations:
1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Usually, this entails using no more than 10% of a work (a poem, paper, or other document) and giving proper credit to the author or artist. There are usually greater restrictions for copies of works that are included as a regular part of a syllabus. For more information on copyright, see http://www2.canisius.edu/canhp/canlib/copyright.html . If in doubt, ask a librarian.

The department also has on staff five Crime Prevention Officers who develop and conduct crime prevention programs that benefit the college community. Crime prevention brochures are available free of charge through Public Safety. Public Safety also provides assistance with persons affiliated with Canisius who experience
minor vehicle problems on campus and within the Public Safety jurisdictional area. Public Safety runs self defense training programs throughout the academic year, please contact the office for more details.

STUDENT ACCOUNTS
(Health Science Building, Room 202 Ext. 2800)
www.canisius.edu/student_accts

Student Accounts handles most of the financial transactions between the students and the College.  Many important details handled through Student Accounts include:
  • Billing information
  • Flex Fund
  • Payment Plans
  • Golden Choice
  • Griffin Tuition Plan
  • Meal plan changes during the first two weeks of each semester
  • Paychecks for students who have been awarded jobs through the Griffin Employment Grants or the College Workstudy Program (CWS) can be picked up at the Bursar’s Office.
Paying Your Semester Tuition Bill
Tuition, fees, room and board are due on the date printed on the bill.  Students must either pay the bill in full, less NYS TAP, be enrolled in the Griffin
Payment Plan, or sign a Canisius College Semester Payment Plan.  Failure to do this by the close of business on the due date printed on the front of the bill will result in the assessment of a $300.00 LATE CHARGE.  Canisius College accepts cash, personal checks, bank drafts, money orders, as well as VISA, Mastercard, or Discover. (Credit cards can be used online.)

All payments are credited on the day received, rather than the date postmarked.  If a student is expecting any financial aid, he/she may deduct that amount from the Net Balance Due, pay the remainder, and sign a Semester Payment Plan until the expected Financial Aid is credited to your account.

Semester Payment Plan
If payment in full is not feasible by the due date, or if Financial Aid monies are expected to cover all or most of the bill, a student may defer payment until later in the semester by signing a Canisius College Semester Payment Plan.  If a student wishes to utilize the Payment Plan, he/she should do so by the due date on the bill.  A default charge of 5% will be assessed if the plan is not paid in full by its due date.

The Griffin Payment Plan
Canisius College has implemented a ten (10) month, interest-free payment plan to ease educational expenses.  The only cost is an annual administration fee of $50.00. The plan is intended for students attending the Fall and Spring semesters.

Griffin Payment Plan Advantages:

  • No interest
  • Convenient monthly payments
  • More time to pay
  • Low administration fee

STUDENT RECORDS & REGISTRATION
(Bagen 106 Ext. 2990)
www.canisius.edu/registrar/

Student Records publishes, on the web, course and exam schedules for the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.  Many important details are handled through Student Records, such as:
  • all registration transactions

  • enrollment certifications for health insurance
  • student loan deferments
  • transcripts
  • Office of Veteran Affairs – information regarding VA benefits
Requests for transcripts, in order to transfer to another college, university or professional school, or for other purposes, must be made in writing at least
three days before they are needed. Students can request copies of their transcripts for personal use. This will be clearly marked “STUDENT’S COPY.” These unofficial transcripts also can be printed via the Banner System.  Please allow sufficient time for your requests.  No transcript will be released until the student has cleared all financial obligations to the College.  There is no charge for transcripts.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure Student Records has his/her correct address.

Students wishing to declare or change a major must notify this Office. Single majors can be declared immediately.  Dual majors must pick up forms in the Student Advisement Center and have the chairs of both departments and the appropriate associate dean approve the dual major before the change can be made on the student’s record.

STUDENT RETENTION (Science Building, Room 003, tunnel level Ext. 3737)
www.canisius.edu/retention

The main activity is to aid students in resolving individual problems as they arise.  Facilitating social adjustment to college life, monitoring and encouraging academic progress, guiding students toward resolving personal problems, and fostering awareness of college services and resources are just a few of the ways the office assists students. Parents also play an important role in their daughters’ or sons’ education; because of this, the Student Retention Office communicates with parents on a regular basis through a series of newsletters and a toll free phone number.

We are open and available for any questions you may have.
