Barcelona is a multicultural and cosmopolitan city. It is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid, with a population of 1,621,537. The city boasts beautiful architecture—it was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold medal in 1999 for this. Barcelona is the only city to be awarded this honor; it is historically given to an architect. Barcelona is one of the world’s major global cities as a leader in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts. Studying in this city of influence is sure to develop a student’s global perspective!
