The grant application process can be very demanding, requiring extensive research to match a project with an appropriate sponsor, clear and focused writing of the proposal, and careful and detailed budgeting. But even after the check is received and all the paperwork is filed, the grant process is not over -- that's when stewardship begins.
Of all the steps involved in the grant process, one of the most important is stewardship -- the process of acknowledging, managing, and reporting on the gift after it is awarded. Stewardship is important because it enables Canisius to develop long-lasting relationships with sponsors. Those relationships pave the way for the college to extend or renew grants or to return to the same source for another gift.
Acknowledgement
Good stewardship begins with a thank you letter, signed by the president or other college officer. After that initial acknowledgment, most corporate or foundation sponsors also require regular reports about the project. We will work with you to make sure you meet these reporting deadlines.
Visits
We can assist grant recipients in making arrangements for site visits to the college by corporate or foundation representatives. We also forward a copy of any news articles related to the grant that come to our attention.
Involvement
Some of the most important stewardship activities, however, depend on the initiative of the recipients themselves. We encourage grant recipients to be aware of potential stewardship opportunities, and to look for activities within their grant program that can help strengthen their relationship with corporate or foundation supporters.
