Women's Studies

Learn Outside the Classroom

Independent study courses and internships are available through the women's studies program.  Students have interned at the YWCA, the League of Women Voters, the Canisius College Women's Business Center and the regional National Organization for Women.

Each spring, the Canisius College Women's Studies Committee presents three I. Joan Lorch Awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to promote women's causes on the Canisius College campus through the development of courses, initiating special programs or performing outstanding activities on a committee, in a department, governing body or club.  Awards are given in the categories of faculty, staff and student.  I. Joan Lorch is a retired Canisius biology professor.  Lorch founded the women's studies program at Canisius and taught biology for women for many years.  The award is named in her honor to recognize her commitment to social justice issues.
