July 12-29, 2020 Faith & Justice in the Time of COVID-19
Be the Light Youth Theology Institute
At Be the Light, we provide rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a week-long immersion in the faith that does justice. Through experiences in the city of Buffalo and academic sessions led by Canisius faculty and friends, we witness and study real examples of justice and injustice. Through workshops and leadership development activities, we provide the tools to identify and address similar issues wherever they may be found. Through daily prayer, faith-sharing, and sacrament, we draw spiritual strength and insight from our Catholic, Jesuit tradition to fulfill our vocation as seekers of God’s kingdom of peace and justice. Be educated. Be inspired. Be empowered. Be the Light.
Owing to uncertainties about facility availability and the feasibility of arranging travel for Summer 2020, the Be the Light Leadership Team has decided to cancel the on-campus version of Be the Light scheduled for July 19-25, 2020.
That said, we will be hosting an online version of Be the Light between Sunday, July 12, and Wednesday, July 29! Our theme for this special version of BTLI will be “Faith and Justice in the Time of COVID-19.” This online program will be open to new BTLI participants as well as BTLI alumni.
After a live online welcome session on July 12, we will be uploading academic, immersion-workshop, and spirituality-based content on Mondays and Wednesdays of the next 3 weeks. Reflection questions for each of these components will allow you to engage personally with this content and see its relevance in your own lives and your own situations. Weekly live (virtual) faith-sharing sessions with our student leaders will also be available. After it all, we’ll gather again together (virtually) for mass and a final sendoff.
We deeply regret we will not be hosting folks on our campus to live, learn, pray, and be inspired together, as we have the last several years; but we believe this decision is necessary in light of all the complications that the COVID-19 outbreak has caused – not only here in Buffalo, but in the United States and throughout the whole world. That said, we are excited to be able to offer our services for the promotion of the faith that does justice, especially in such a unique and difficult time in our world. While it’s not how we wanted to share ourselves with you, it is the best way we know how in this time – the best way we know how to live the words of the famous Prayer of St. Francis (and help you to live them too!):
… where there is doubt, [let me sow] faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy …
