From our first cohort of 35 Griffs studying at a downtown campus to our strong alumni network of more than 49,000 worldwide, the story of Canisius College is one of scholarship, values and lifelong connections.

Our History

While some things have endured, much has changed throughout our 150-year history. Learn about the people, traditions and major milestones that have shaped Canisius into the college community we know today.

1870-1940

Establishing our first campus, making the move to Old Main, and adopting a mythical mascot.

1941-1965

Fighting in a world war, dedicating Christ the King Chapel, and marching to Selma.

1966-1990

Promoting progress and peace, celebrating our first Fulbright scholar, and endowing a business school.

1991-Present

Pursuing major renovations, unveiling the Montante Cultural Center, and welcoming our first lay president.
