Annual Business Awards Dinner Set for October 15, 2019
BUFFALO, NY – John F. Somers, president and CEO of Harmac Medical Products Inc., will receive the Business Executive of the Year Award at the 51st celebration of the Canisius College Business Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 15 at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens. Established in 1969, the Business Executive of the Year Award honors an outstanding Western New York business executive who has achieved professional success and demonstrated a broad interest in civic affairs. The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m.; dinner is at 6:30 p.m. The awards ceremony also includes the presentation of the Dr. Bernard L. Martin and Dr. Richard A. Shick awards.
As president and CEO of Harmac Medical Products, Somers oversees the contract engineering and manufacturing company, which produces single-use medical devices and provides innovative technical solutions and manufacturing services for companies of all sizes, including leading Fortune 500 medical technology companies and high-potential start-ups. Somers and his executive team have overseen the extensive growth of the privately held company, which includes the addition of manufacturing locations in Ireland and Mexico, to complement its U.S. operations. Additionally under Somer’s leadership, Harmac developed the Bailey Green Initiative, a community-led partnership that’s improving and supporting Buffalo’s Bailey-Genesee neighborhood, where Harmac’s headquarters is located. This unique, award-winning public-private partnership is focused on stabilizing and transforming a neighborhood that has faced considerable challenges and decades of neglect.
Somers earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and an MBA from Boston University. He also completed the President’s Program in Leadership at Harvard Business School.
In addition to the Business Executive of the Year Award, Canisius will present Linda A. Dobmeier MBA ’83 with the Dr. Bernard L. Martin Award. Established in 1976 by the Board of Directors of the Canisius College Masters Alumni Association (MBAA), the award recognizes a distinguished graduate of the college’s graduate business programs who has excelled professionally and also provided significant service to the community.
Linda Dobmeier is executive vice president of operations for Dobmeier Janitor Supply Inc. and responsible for executing the company’s strategic vision of educating customers to help them understand and adopt the latest cleaning technologies.
She is a former educator who remains deeply involved with her alma maters and other educational institutions throughout the region.
At Canisius, Dobmeier is a past member of the Canisius College Scholarship Associates, a former member of the Canisius College Board of Trustees and most recently established the Robert and Helen Dobmeier Family Scholarship Fund at Canisius. She also serves as chair of the Buffalo State College Council, appointed by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Dobmeier has a bachelor’s degree in education from Buffalo State College, a master’s degree in education from the University at Buffalo and a master’s degree in business administration from Canisius College.
Canisius College will present the Dr. Richard A. Shick Award to Michael F. Newman ’90, MBA ’99. The award was created in 2001 in honor of the dean who served the Richard J. Wehle School of Business from 1979 to 2002. It is presented to an individual who has made important contributions to the success of the business school and Canisius College.
Michael Newman is owner and executive vice president of NOCO Energy Corporation, a third-generation family owned and locally operated company. Newman directly oversees NOCO Retail, NOCO Real Estate & Development and Empire Petroleum Services.
He has served on the board of the Canisius Business Advisory Council for the past 11 years and was chair for four years. He is also a past member of the Canisius Entrepreneurship on Campus Program and a past recipient of the Dr. Bernard M. Martin Award.
