Canisius AMA Chapter Takes Home Top Prizes

April 2, 2016

BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius University Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) took home two awards following the AMA’s International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, LA. The Canisius AMA Chapter was one of nearly 200 student chapters that participated in the conference. Twenty Canisius students represented the college during the five-day event. They traveled with faculty advisory David J. Snyder, PhD, associate professor of marketing.

The Canisius chapter received first place in the Best Chapter Exhibit competition, which challenged students to create a trade-show booth that reflects their chapter and the theme of the conference, “Mint Your Future.” The Canisius chapter’s exhibit was recognized for having the best educational value. Students competed against 39 other schools in this competition. They were awarded by a panel of six judges from large state schools.

The Canisius AMA Chapter also won second place in the American Marketing Association’s Best Community and Social Impact Video competition. The three-minute video, produced by AMA students, sheds light on the Buffalo City Mission and its efforts to decrease the homeless population in Western New York.

Management major Kayla Maggiore ’17 placed in the top 10 of the AMA’s new Perfect Pitch Competition. While not truly a sales-specific role play, the Perfect Pitch competition is a 90 second interview in which participants must position themselves as “right for a job.” Similar to an elevator pitch competition, the goal is for students to provide two or three key selling points about themselves, which indicate why they are an ideal candidate. They must then support those qualifications with examples. For placing in the top 10 out of 200 schools, Maggiore received an honorable mention.

The Canisius AMA chapter also competed in the SABRE (Strategic Allocation of Business Resources) Simulation and the Marketing Strategy competitions.

The American Marketing Association is the largest marketing association in North America. It is a professional association for individuals and organizations involved in the practice, teaching and study of marketing.

One of 28 Catholic, Jesuit colleges in the nation, Canisius is the premier private college in Western New York.
