Canisius Athletes Score High in Classroom

Buffalo, NY - Nearly 70 percent of Canisius' student-athlete population recorded a grade point average of 3.0 or better and 27 of those student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall semester, the college announced Tuesday, January 16. In all, 13 teams posted a team GPA of 3.25 or higher and the school's 373 student-athletes combined for a departmental grade point average of 3.285 for the fall term.
 
The 27 student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 matches the previous record for the Athletic Department set last spring. Those 27 student-athletes represent 12 different teams. After the efforts in the classroom in the fall, the Canisius Athletic Department's cumulative GPA sits at 3.245.

The women's cross country/track team led all Golden Griffin programs in the fall semester with a 3.53 team GPA. The women's soccer program placed second overall in the fall semester with a 3.47 team grade point average, followed by women's swimming and diving and hockey teams, which each posted a 3.42 GPA. Men's cross country/track (3.40), rowing (3.39), golf (3.39), softball (3.33) and women's lacrosse (3.32) were all better than 3.30 for the fall term, with men's soccer (3.24), men's swimming and diving (3.23) and volleyball (3.22) finishing higher than 3.20 in the classroom.

A total of 52 Canisius student-athletes were named to their respective sport's MAAC All-Academic Team last fall, which is 70 percent of the student-athletes eligible for the honor.
