Canisius Opts In to NYS' Enhanced Tuition Award Program

June 21, 2017

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius College is pleased to announce that it has opted to participate in New York State’s Enhanced Tuition Awards (ETA) program, the private institution counterpart to the Excelsior Scholarship for public colleges and universities.  The program provides awards of up to $6,000 for eligible undergraduate students who enroll in a private, not-for-profit college or university in New York State.  First-time, continuing and transfer students residing in New York State are eligible to apply.

“Canisius College is dedicated to being an affordable and premier university,” says Kathleen Davis, vice president for enrollment management.  “The college goes above and beyond to make our Catholic, Jesuit education accessible to students regardless of financial need and our No. 8 U.S. News Best Value ranking is a testament to this.  Our participation in New York’s ETA program takes this commitment one step further,” continues Davis.

New York State’s Enhanced Tuition Award program is administered by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC).  Visit the HESC online to apply and obtain an outline of conditions associated with receiving ETA.

The program will be phased in over three years beginning in fall 2017 for New York residents, who earn up to $100,000 annually, and increasing to $110,000 in 2018 and reaching $125,000 in 2019.  Awards will be comprised of an Enhanced Tuition Award from New York State, matching funds provided by Canisius and a student’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award, if they qualify.

The ETA also includes a tuition freeze.  Students who receive an award will have their tuition locked from the time the award is granted through the end of the eligibility period.  Additionally, a student’s ETA will not reduce the amount of other scholarship or need-based financial assistance a student receives or may be eligible to receive in the future.

Ninety-eight percent (98 %) of undergraduate students at Canisius currently receive financial assistance.  The Student Loan Report also recognized the college’s academic quality and net cost of attendance when it ranked Canisius among the top colleges and universities in the nation offering the most in financial assistance to freshmen. The average financial aid package for freshmen who reside on campus is $32,878.

One of 28 Jesuit colleges in the nation, Canisius is the premier private college in Western New York.
